Bruce Beasley: In Pursuit of Form and Feeling

The City of Pembroke Pines and the Frank Art Gallery are pleased to present Bruce Beasley: In Pursuit of Form and Feeling, which will be on display virtually from May 20 through July 8, 2021.

Co-curated by Marlena Doktorczyk-Donohue, Director | The Bruce Beasley Foundation
Produced by Samuel Lopez De Victoria, Director | Interactive Initiative

The exploration of shape is simultaneously physical and virtual in the gravity-free studio of sculptor Bruce Beasley. Through virtual reality technologies that record the spontaneous movements of his arms and hands, the artist creates and directs an unbridled flow of shapes just as a conductor conducts music. These captured forms are released from the interference of gravity and are suspended in virtual three dimensional space at the artist's will, enabling Beasley to move, stretch and intertwine gestures until some emotive resonance emerges from within the arrangement. With this purist ambition at heart, the artist seamlessly translates an otherwise techy VR methodology into a natural tool for intuitive mark-making. After sixty years of strict loyalty to working only in three dimensions, Beasley’s VR-induced two dimensional collages reveal a refined mode of sketching that oscillates naturally between the classic modernist concerns of form and process.

Bits & Pieces: Virtual Exhibition and Tour

The exhibition may be over, but Bits & Pieces is still viewable via an interactive 360° virtual tour! Navigate through the virtual exhibition, here!

From February 18 through April 30, 2021, The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery hosted Bits & Pieces, an exhibition that explored layered ideas, lamination of contrasting styles, and paintings within paintings. Bits & Pieces reinterprets the practices of collage and assemblage –both in terms of technique and conceptual framework- in the unexpected context of a virtual space. With a focus on artists who utilize cropped and fragmented imagery in their artistic production, this collaborative project disassembles and recombines existing works of art to create a new conversation about authorship, representation and subjectivity.

Featured artists include Jason Aponte, Diego Gutierrez, Jefreid Lotti, Jackie Tileston, Jonathan Ryan Harvey, and Third Space solo artist, Twyla Gettert. This virtual exhibition is a curatorial collaboration with South Florida-based art and technology organization, Interactive Initiative.

Biological Futurism: Virtual Exhibition & Tour

The exhibition may be over, but Biological Futurism is still viewable via an interactive 360° virtual tour! Navigate through the virtual exhibition, here!

From November 5, 2020 through January 30, 2021,The City of Pembroke Pines and the Frank Art Gallery hosted Biological Futurism, which invited guests to venture into an immersive world inspired by scientific illustration and the adaptive capabilities of nature. Presented via a 360° interactive tour, Biological Futurism highlights the work of artists Judith Berk King, Georgeta Fondos, Lisa Haque, Andy Lomas, Lisa McCutcheon and Gretchen Scharnagl. This virtual exhibition is a curatorial collaboration with South Florida-based art and technology organization, Interactive Initiative.

Challenging the divide between art and science, Biological Futurism explored topics of hybridization, environmental biology and cellular interaction through art. Evoking memories of curio cabinets within archetypal science museums, The Frank reinvented itself as a vast display case brimming with scientific specimens – all of which are imagined, reconstructed, or transformed. Freed from the boundaries of the canvas, biological organisms danced across gallery walls and escape the constraints of time and place.

In celebration of 'Biological Futurism,' The Frank hosted free virtual art workshops, lectures, tutorials and storybook readings. Please visit The Frank's virtual classroom here to access this free art education content!
