In Pursuit of Form & Feeling

From May 20 through July 8, 2021, The City of Pembroke Pines and the Frank Art Gallery hosted a solo exhibition that centered on the exploration of shape within the gravity-free studio of sculptor Bruce Beasley. Through virtual reality technologies that record the spontaneous movements of his arms and hands, the artist creates and directs an unbridled flow of shapes just as a conductor conducts music. These captured forms are released from the interference of gravity and are suspended in virtual three dimensional space at the artist's will, enabling Beasley to move, stretch and intertwine gestures until some emotive resonance emerges from within the arrangement. With this purist ambition at heart, the artist seamlessly translates an otherwise techy VR methodology into a natural tool for intuitive mark-making. After sixty years of strict loyalty to working only in three dimensions, Beasley’s VR-induced two dimensional collages reveal a refined mode of sketching that oscillates naturally between the classic modernist concerns of form and process.
